Expectations for Boston Red Sox
Long story short, expectations will be very high. After a massive rebuild this offseason, acquiring Alex Bregman, Garrett Crochet, and Walker Buehler, the Boston Red Sox are primed to compete in one of the most challenging divisions in baseball. They have all the tools to put together a highly successful season.
Winning 81 games in 2024 and finishing third in the AL East, the Red Sox were middle of the pack. They were competitive, battling with the Yankees and Orioles throughout the season. Now, they boast a lineup featuring Jarren Duran, Rafael Devers, Alex Bregman, Triston Casas, Masataka Yoshida, a healthy Trevor Story, Wilyer Abreu, Connor Wong, and Ceddanne Rafaela—an offense that can do serious damage. If they can improve upon last year’s 4.64 runs per game (ninth in the league), this lineup has the potential to average over five runs per game.
The rotation, led by Crochet, has the talent to dominate. He has all the tools to come into Boston and contend for a Cy Young Award. Behind him, Tanner Houck was serviceable in 2024, while Brayan Bello, Walker Buehler, Lucas Giolito, and Kutter Crawford round out the starting staff. Last season, the Red Sox ranked 23rd in runs allowed per game, giving up 4.61 on average. With the additions of Crochet and Buehler, those numbers should improve.

With the amount of talent this team has added, surpassing last season’s win total feels very attainable. Eighty-seven wins seem well within reach, 90 looks realistic, and the ceiling is around 92. The floor feels like 85 wins. This team should be an absolute joy to watch. As a lifelong Yankees fan, it pains me to say that, but facts are facts.
