The Fourth of July is here, and across this great land, approximately 150 million hot dogs will be consumed at various soirees and shindigs from Sarasota to Sacramento and all points in between. That does not include the gaggle of glizzies that will be gobbled with reckless abandon at the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Prior to last year, the event, which is held at the original Nathan’s Famous restaurant in Coney Island, had been dominant by Joey Chestnut for nearly two decades.
In 2007, Chestnut ended the reign of six-time defending champion Takeru Kobayashi, starting a run of eight consecutive titles. That streak came to an end in 2015, when Matt Stonie edged him by two dogs to take the title. But a new streak began in 2016, and in 2023, he made it eight straight for a second time and 16 overall.
However, a record ninth straight Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest title was not to be for Chestnut. Weeks before last year’s contest, Chestnut was banned from participating due to a sponsorship deal with plant-based protein purveyor Impossible Foods.
The ban was soon rescinded, but the damage was done. Without Chestnut present, veteran competitive eater Patrick Bertoletti won the Mustard Belt for the first time after eating 58 hot dogs.
But will his reign be short-lived? The hatchet has been buried, and Chestnut will be back where he belongs to try to win a 17th title.
Betting on Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest odds garners a lot of interest each year, and Chestnut’s return should see no shortage of bets at top online sportsbooks.
Unsurprisingly, the glizzy-gobbling GOAT is a heavy favorite, as per this morning’s odds at BetOnline.

Expectations are that Chestnut will make a triumphant return to his throne. But how many hot dogs will he lay waste to in the process? The total is set at 71.5, with odds of -120 for both the over and under.
Chestnut hit the 70-dog mark each year from 2016 to 2021, with a high of 76 in 2021. That remains the current Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest record for most hot dogs eaten in one contest. Will he celebrate his return by establishing a new record? He (or someone else) is +250 to do so.
Are you looking to bet on someone other than Chestnut? If so, BetOnline offers multiple head-to-head matchup odds, as well as an option to bet on a winner sans Chestnut.
While the king returns to Coney Island to reclaim his crown, the queen returns to defend her Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest women’s title once again.
Last year, Miki Sudo set a women’s world record by hoovering down 51 hot dogs. In the process, she won her third straight title and her tenth overall. Her dominance was interrupted only because she missed the contest in 2021 due to swapping a food baby for a real baby.
Will Sudo shoot for a new mark this year? Her total is set at 46.5, with the over at -150 odds and the under at +110.
To watch Chestnut and Sudo pursue glizzy immortality, tune into ESPN3 for the women’s contest, which is set for 10:45 a.m. ET, and to ESPN2 for the men’s contest, which is set for noon ET.
