The most beautiful day in all of sports, the day when every major league shares the stage. They call it the Sports Equinox, the rare occasion when the NBA, MLB, NHL, and NFL all play on the same night. To make it even better, the MLS postseason is also in full swing.
My co-host on Up Your Units and our senior writer here at Betting News, Nate Hornung, and I decided to celebrate this special occasion the best way we know how, with action. We have cooked up the sweat of the century: a five-leg parlay for this unforgettable night in sports.
MLB
Freddie Freeman to record a hit tonight is one of my favorite plays for Game 3 of the World Series. He enters the matchup with an elite rating on Batters-Box’s current season model. In the default ratings, he carries a “Great” designation and continues to deliver strong results. In 248 “Great” rating games, Freeman has recorded a hit 75% of the time. This season, when graded as “Elite,” he has a hit in 70% of those games, based on a 71-game sample.
Tonight, he faces Max Scherzer, who has been struggling badly against left-handed hitters. The 41-year-old has been getting crushed in that split, allowing an 8.53 ERA, 8.04 xERA, and 4.60 xFIP over his last 30 lefty matchups. Even worse, he has allowed nearly 67% hard contact, a 24% barrel rate, and 4.26 HR/9 during that stretch. Those hitters have posted absurd expected numbers: a .466 xBA, 1.060 xSLG, and .441 xwOBA. Getting Freeman to record a hit at anything under -250 feels like great value and a strong leg for any parlay.
NFL
Back Pacheco to find the Promised Land this evening. Kareem Hunt has been dealing with an injury this week, leading me to think there are plenty of goal line touches to go around for Pacheco. The Commanders rank in the bottom third of the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game, dropping to bottom six in rushes allowed per game.
In what I expect to be a high scoring game anyways, there should plenty of opportunities for #10 to find the end zone, something he’s only done twice this year. He’s seen the most touches of the season in the past two games, going for 50 rushing yards in each, including a double digit yard rush in 6/7 games. Look for him to get plenty of red zone work with Hunt being limited.

Let’s ride with the Seattle Sounders in this opening match. Despite losing both head to head meetings with Minnesota United earlier this year, the Sounders dominated. They controlled over 67% of possession, won the corner kick battle 17-3 (not a typo), and outshot the Loonies overall. Seattle has been to the MLS Playoffs before, and there veteran experience will carry them tonight.
The line has steamed in their direction but that doesn’t scare me at all. The books are waking up to the fact that this Sounders team is gritty and has what it takes to finally take down their hosts.
NBA
This is a play I love so much that I took it straight: Trail Blazers first quarter moneyline. The Lakers are coming off an emotional win on Sunday over the Kings. They were without Luka Doncic and LeBron James yet still managed to win 127-120. Austin Reaves exploded for 51 points, the Lakers attempted 46 free throws, made 41 of them, and put up 36 points in the opening quarter. Now, with this game back in Los Angeles, they had to travel home after that massive performance.
Portland, meanwhile, is coming off a road loss to the Clippers but stayed in L.A., avoiding travel. This feels like a great spot for the Trail Blazers to start strong and catch the Lakers flat early after such an exhausting win just 24 hours ago.
NHL
It’s tough to get people to root for no goals, but that’s what we’re doing as we back the under 6.5 in this NHL game tonight between the Blues and Penguins. Both teams have been involved in high scoring affairs recently. The Penguins have seen at least eight total goals in their last two and are coming off a shootout loss that ended their four game winning streak. The Blues have seen a minimum of 10 goals in their last two games, but I do not trust their offense tonight.
Pittsburgh ranks No. 7 in the league in goals against per game, giving up just 2.56 per contest. While the Blues give up over four, their offense won’t be able to keep up. I see the Penguins controlling the pace of this game at home, making it very hard on the Blues to get anything going offensively.
Trust both tenders to keep it tight between the posts, and we’ll be well on our way to cash the under.
