2025 U.S. Open Predictions and Picks
Tournament Winner Pick: Bryson DeChambeau
The U.S. Open was first played in 1895, and in that time, there have been only seven repeat winners. DeChambeau is well-positioned to become the eighth.
Last year, he finished tied for sixth at the Masters and second at the PGA Championship before winning the U.S. Open at Pinehurst. This year, he tied for fifth at Augusta and tied for second at the PGA Championship. That bodes well for his chances to win at Oakmont, where he tied for 15th in his first major as a professional in 2016.
If he can win, he will become just the seventh three-time winner in U.S. Open history, joining Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin, and Tiger Woods. That is some elite company.
Other Tournament Picks
Jason Day to make the cut (-130 at BetOnline)
Day missed the cut at the Memorial Tournament, but he has not missed consecutive cuts since 2023. He also has yet to miss the cut at the same major three consecutive times, and he missed the cut at the U.S. Open in 2023 and 2024.
This is good value for him to make it to the weekend at Oakmont, where he finished tied for eighth in 2016. He is not performing as well in majors as he was at that point in his career, but he is still a very good golfer.
Sam Burns to finish in the top 40 (-120 at Bovada)
Burns shot an 8-under 62 in the final round at the RBC Canadian Open to force a playoff with 54-hole co-leader Ryan Fox, but missed out on his first PGA Tour win in over two years, as Fox took the win on the fourth extra hole.
But Burns has been in decent form as of late, finishing in the top 20 in five of his last six tournaments.
Burns has finished inside the top 30 in 10 of his last 13 tournaments at par-70 courses, including both such tournaments this year. With those results, these odds, and how he has played recently, this is an easy choice.
Ben Griffin to finish in the top 30 (+125 at Bovada)
Griffin is trending up for a spot on the U.S. team for this year’s Ryder Cup, and a solid result at the U.S. Open will only boost his stock. After finishing tied for eighth at the PGA Championship, winning the Charles Schwab Challenge, and coming in second behind Scheffler at the Memorial, he is seventh in the latest rankings.
This will be his U.S. Open debut, so there is some level of risk, but he had not made the cut at a major prior to last month’s result at Quail Hollow and promptly finished in the top ten.
Harris English to finish in the top 20 (+225 at BetOnline)
English is also in contention for a Ryder Cup spot, as he sits two spots behind Griffin entering the U.S. Open. He finished tied for 12th at the Masters, tied for second at the PGA Championship, and has finished in the top 20 in five of his last seven tournaments, so he is another player in some decent form at present.
Shane Lowry to finish in the top 20 (+140 at BetOnline)
Lowry appeared to be making a serious Sunday charge at the RBC Canadian Open as he went eagle-birdie-birdie-birdie in his first four holes, but he played the final 14 holes at +2 and finished five shots behind Burns and Fox.
Still, he logged his ninth top-20 finish this year, and if you are looking for someone to back beyond the likes of Scheffler, DeChambeau, Rahm, and McIlroy, he is a very, very good option.
Beyond his form this year, he may bring some extra motivation to Oakmont after how his last U.S. Open there unfolded. He entered the final round with a four-shot lead, but he finished tied for second and three shots behind Dustin Johnson after shooting a final-round 76.
