Solid Saturday Brings Burns to the Brink
Last weekend, Burns agonizingly missed out on his first PGA Tour win in more than two years as he lost out to Ryan Fox in a playoff at the RBC Canadian Open.
Talk about turning a minor setback into a major comeback.
After a bogey-double bogey-bogey-bogey finish in the first round took the shine off of what was going to be a good first round, Burns shot a 5-under 65 on Friday to move into the lead, and he kept it heading into Sunday by carding a 1-under 69 yesterday.
Burns closed his round with a one-shot advantage over Adam Scott and J.J. Spaun and as one of five players sitting at par or better. And along with being on the cusp of his first major title, he could make himself a lock for the U.S. team for this year’s Ryder Cup when he was 24th in the team rankings prior to the RBC Canadian Open.

A big day also looms for Spaun, who is 13th in the rankings, two spots ahead of Burns.
If both players are able to finish under par, it will be hard to deny their worthiness for a spot, given what Oakmont has done to the best of the best this week.

It has been a rather humbling few days for many of the best players in the world, as is often the case at the U.S. Open. But Burns has battled through it all and is 18 holes from the biggest win of his career, which would cap a recent resurgence for the five-time winner.
In his first ten tournaments in 2025, Burns finished in the top 20 only once. But he has finished in the top 20 in five of his last six tournaments, and a victory drought that nearly ended last week could be about to end in a major way.

Other than his closing stretch on Thursday, Burns has been solid and steady. Across 36 holes on Friday and Saturday, he carded only three bogeys, and two of those were immediately followed by a birdie on the next hole.
But can he close the deal? The pressure of holding a lead or being in contention in the final round of a major has gotten the best of many, many players, former major winners and potential first-timers alike. However,
Another solid option for Sunday is Scott to card a better score than Spaun, which is +104 at BetOnline. Scott has shot 70-70-67 in the first three rounds, and he should pose a challenge for Burns today. But the 54-hole leader has won each of the first two majors this season, and the move is to back Burns to follow suit.
Also, Ben Griffin (-0.5 is -101 at BetOnline) is a good head-to-head option against Russell Henley. After he went 4-over in his final five holes yesterday, Griffin is likely out of the running for the win.
