One of the greatest spectacles in sports is almost here. Most weeks throughout the year, the best golfers in the world battle it out for individual honors, whether on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, or LIV Golf. This week, however, is all about team spirit and collective pride as the USA’s best and Europe’s best duke it out in the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

2025 has been an exciting year for golf. Scottie Scheffler’s firm grasp on the top spot of the world rankings has only strengthened. The start of his season was delayed by a kitchen mishap, and he did not win in his first eight tournaments, but ho-hum, ho-hum, here he with six wins, including the PGA Championship and Open Championship.

Other highlights include the end of Rory McIlroy’s major drought and the completion of his career Grand Slam in a Masters playoff win over Justin Rose, J.J. Spaun’s rollercoaster Sunday to survive and win a war of attrition at the U.S. Open, Tommy Fleetwood picking a fine time to claim his first PGA Tour win at the revamped Tour Championship, and the emergence of Ben Griffin.

These top talents will all tee it up this week at Bethpage Black. The course, located at Bethpage State Park in New York, will host the Ryder Cup for the first time. It has hosted the U.S. Open twice (2002 and 2009), hosted the PGA Championship in 2019, and will host the PGA Championship in 2033.

Which team will be celebrating on Sunday? With the festivities set to begin with Friday foursomes and fourballs, top online sportsbooks such as BetOnline have Team USA as the favorite to reclaim the Ryder Cup from Team Europe, who won 16.5 to 11.5 in Italy two years ago.

Ryder Cup 2025 Schedule and Format

Since 1979, the Ryder Cup’s first year as USA vs. Europe, the event has consisted of 28 total matches.

This is the schedule of those matches:

  • Friday AM: three 2 vs. 2 foursome matches
  • Friday PM: three 2 vs. 2 fourball matches
  • Saturday AM: three foursome matches
  • Saturday PM: three fourball matches
  • Sunday: 12 head-to-head singles matches

For those unfamiliar with the Ryder Cup or golf in general, what are foursome and fourball matches?

In foursome matches, the two players on each team alternate shots on each hole (including tee shots on each hole). Holes are either halved or won depending on the number of strokes it takes for each pair to complete a hole.

In fourball matches, each player plays the hole as if they would in an individual stroke play event. Each player’s score is added to form that pair’s score for the hole, and holes are either halved or won depending on the scores for each pair.

Each 2025 Ryder Cup match will be worth one total point. If a match ends in victory for one side, the winner will receive the full point. If the match ends in a tie, each side will receive a half-point.

Because Team Europe won the 2023 Ryder Cup, they need only a tie to retain the Cup until the 2027 event, which will take place at Adare Manor in Ireland. For Team USA to win the Cup, they must earn at least 14.5 points.

Bethpage Black is widely known as one of the toughest golf courses in the United States, if not the toughest. Because of its reputation, there has been discussion prior to the 2025 Ryder Cup that it could be the most difficult venue in Ryder Cup history.

Bethpage Black opened in 1936, and it is one of five courses at Bethpage State Park, which is located on Long Island. To signify its difficulty, it holds a slope rating of 155, putting it ahead of all four 2025 major championship courses and on par with TPC Sawgrass, the venue for the annual Players Championship.
