Will the Rocket Classic Clear or Cloud the Ryder Cup Picture?
For much of the Travelers Championship, it looked like Tommy Fleetwood would finally capture his long-awaited first PGA Tour victory. And with three holes left, Fleetwood held a two-shot lead, needing only to avoid disaster to get his big breakthrough.
However, he was not able to do that very thing, as bogeys on 16 and 18 saw him miss out on even a playoff. Swooping in to snatch the win was Keegan Bradley, who birdied 18 to finish a stroke ahead of Fleetwood.
The win, Bradley’s second Travelers title in three years, and the $3.6 million payday that came with it, catapulted the U.S. Ryder Cup captain from 17th to ninth in the team rankings, only three spots out of an automatic spot on the team.
The U.S. team has not had a playing captain in the Ryder Cup since Arnold Palmer in 1963, but Bradley, who has never been a part of a winning Ryder Cup team as a player, has put himself firmly in position with his win at TPC River Highlands.
Will he bolster his case further this week? He is one of numerous notable names in the Rocket Classic field, which features several other players who are hoping to improve their odds of making the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
That group includes Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin (eighth), Patrick Cantlay (14th), Cameron Young (17th), Tony Finau (19th), Wyndham Clark (22nd), Akshay Bhatia (23rd), and Michael Kim (24th).
The winner of the Rocket Classic will receive $1.728 million, with a check of $1.046 million for a solo runner-up. With that translating into 1728 and 1046 ranking points (one point per $1,000 earned), the team rankings could look much different this time next week.

Rocket Classic Predictions and Picks
Tournament Winner Pick: Patrick Cantlay
Cantlay has not won since the 2022 BMW Championship, and this would be a fine, fine time for him to end that dry spell. After being a part of the last three Presidents Cup and last two Ryder Cup teams, his place in this year’s Ryder Cup team is not a sure bet at present.
He missed a couple of opportunities to earn points by missing the cut at both the PGA Championship and U.S. Open, but in his last four non-major events, he has a tie for 13th (RBC Heritage), a tie for fourth (Truist Championship), and two ties for 12th (Memorial Tournament and Travelers Championship). Overall, he has three top-five finishes and eight top-15 finishes in 14 tournaments this season, with all but one top-15 coming at a big event (six signature events plus the Players Championship).
Can he put together four good rounds to position himself for a Rocket Classic win? His four rounds at TPC River Highlands were all in the 60s, which is the first time he had done that since last year’s Travelers. That is an encouraging sign for his chances to contend at Detroit Golf Club, where he finished tied for second three years ago.
Keegan Bradley to finish in the top 20 (-105 at BetOnline)
Bradley entered the Travelers Championship with four top-10 finishes and eight top-15 finishes in 14 tournaments this season, but he had not been at his best when it mattered. In fact, prior to last week, he had not had an under-par round in his final round (when playing the weekend) in his previous six tournaments.
He wasn’t perfect at TPC River Highlands, but he kept his cool on Sunday when he needed to, and he did a solid job throughout the tournament of minimizing mistakes.
It was tempting to back him for back-to-back wins, but that happens so infrequently that it isn’t the sensible move to make. Still, his big win at the Travelers, as well as a stretch of three top-10s in four tournaments, make him a top contender and make this particular play arguably the easiest choice on the board.
Cameron Young to finish in the top 20 (+165 at BetOnline)
Young’s Travelers Championship was a microcosm of his rollercoaster season. He opened with a five-under 65, then shot 73-71-72 in his final three rounds to finish at +1 and in a tie for 52nd.
But he needs to be more up than down this week to boost his Ryder Cup hopes, and he should be. In his two Rocket Classic appearances, he tied for second in 2022 and tied for sixth last year. Some extra sprinkles on a top-10 finish (+350) and a top-five finish (+850) are also well worth it.
Taylor Moore to finish in the top 20 (+250 at BetOnline)
Moore has more missed cuts (four) than top-20 finishes this season (three), but the forecast is favorable for him this week, as he loves playing at Detroit Golf Club. He finished sixth there in 2022, tied for fourth in 2023, and tied for 10th last year, and 10 of his 12 rounds across those three tournaments were in the 60s.
Stephan Jaeger to finish in the top 20 (+265 at BetOnline)
Jaeger has finished outside of the top 20 in each of his last four tournaments, which is his longest streak of the season. Will he end that stretch this week? He missed the cut at last year’s Rocket Classic, but he tied for ninth in 2023 and was alone in fifth in 2022. That familiarity and past success should help his cause in Detroit.
