Will Rory Roar Again at Quail Hollow?
Last month, Rory McIlroy became just the sixth modern-era golfer to complete the career Grand Slam as he defeated Justin Rose in a playoff to win the Masters.
This week, McIlroy will look to go two-for-two in 2025 at one of his favorite courses, Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. McIlroy is a four-time winner of the annual tournament held there, and the first of his 29 career PGA Tour wins came there in 2010.
No one has swept the first two majors in a season since 2015, when Jordan Spieth triumphed at Augusta and then won the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.
As notable as that it is, it is even more notable that only three golfers have won both the Masters and PGA Championship in the same year: Sam Snead (1949), Jack Burke Jr. (1956), and Jack Nicklaus (1963 and 1975).
That’s some serious history to contend with, especially in the current era. But if ever there was a golden opportunity, this is it, with McIlroy one of the betting favorites at a course he has experienced significant success and now free of the pressure of a major drought and career Grand Slam chase.

2025 PGA Championship Predictions and Picks
Tournament Winner Pick: Rory McIlroy (+500)
History is not on McIlroy’s side, and betting on the favorite is not always the right or best move.
But he has had an excellent year thus far, and now that he has checked off the Masters and the career Grand Slam, he can go into the PGA Championship and the rest of this year’s majors with much less internal and external pressure.
Even though expectations will be high for McIlroy, the diminished pressure will be huge for him this week, especially with his history at Quail Hollow.
Of his four wins at Quail Hollow, three have come by four (2010), seven (2015), and five strokes (2024). Don’t be surprised if he produces a similar result this week.
Other Tournament Picks
Justin Thomas to finish in the top 10 (+210)
Who won the last time a major was held at Quail Hollow? That would be Thomas, who won his first major title in the first major held at the course in 2017.
At the Truist Championship, he recorded his third runner-up of the year, finishing two strokes behind tournament winner Sepp Straka. After finishing tied for 36th at the Masters, he enters the PGA Championship with eight straight rounds in the 60s. Look for him to be at the upper end of the leaderboard on Sunday.
Xander Schauffele to finish in the top 10 (+210)
Since the PGA Championship moved from match play to stroke play in 1958, only two golfers have won the tournament in back-to-back years: Tiger Woods (1999-2000 and 2006-07) and Brooks Koepka (2018-19). So, the forecast is not favorable for a repeat for Schauffele, who missed two months of action earlier this season due to injury.
But while he has yet to lift a trophy this season, he has finished tied for 12th, tied for eighth, tied for 18th, and tied for 11th in his last four tournaments. Also, he finished runner-up in the Wells Fargo Championship in both 2023 and 2024 and was the 54-hole leader last year. Even if he does not win, he should have one of his better weeks of the season this week, if not his best.
Sepp Straka to finish in the top 20 (+250)
Is it only a matter of time before Straka wins his first major? With his performances in big events this year, it seems that might be the case. At the Truist Championship, he held his nerve down the stretch to win his second tournament of the season and a $3.6 million payday.
Can he follow the biggest win of his career with a big performance at Quail Hollow? Straka has more missed cuts (five) than top-20 finishes (three) in 15 previous major appearances, including a missed cut at the Masters, but the PGA Championship represents an opportunity to definitively show that he is one of the best of the best.
Andrew Novak to finish in the top 20 (+425)
Novak has been a real feast or famine golfer this season. On one side, he had a team win with Ben Griffin at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last month, reached a playoff in the RBC Heritage, and has two other top-three finishes this season (Farmers Insurance Open and Valero Texas Open). At the same time, he has six missed cuts.
But since missing the cut at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, he has been on a solid run, finishing tied for third, second, first, and then tied for 17th. The North Carolina native is one to watch this week.
Max Homa to finish in the top 20 (+450)
Homa is not quite wandering the wilderness at this point, but he is still trying to find his way back to his best. He couldn’t follow up his tie for 12th at Augusta with great results, as he finished 70th at the RBC Heritage and tied for 30th at the Truist Championship.
But after missing five straight cuts prior to the Masters, playing on Sunday in three consecutive tournaments is something to look positively on. So are his recent performances at Quail Hollow, where he won in 2022 and finished tied for eighth in both 2023 and 2024. In fact, last year’s result was just one of his three top tens for the season.
Perhaps this is a rather optimistic pick, but at these odds, it is a very worthwhile low-risk play.
