Will Scheffler Flay the Field in Fort Worth?
After shooting 69-68 in his first two rounds at Quail Hollow last week, Scheffler took control of the year’s second major on Saturday with a six-under 65.
The first half of his final round in Charlotte proved to be an adventure, but he steadied the ship on the back nine and went on to finish five strokes ahead of Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English, and Davis Riley.
His third major title was his 15th career PGA Tour win, and it was his second consecutive win following an eight-stroke win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
This week, Scheffler will look to become the first golfer to win in three consecutive tournament appearances since Dustin Johnson went back-to-back-to-back at the Genesis Open, WGC-Mexico Championship, and WGC Dell Technologies Match Play in 2017.
In fact, since Tiger Woods did it for the fifth time in a five-tournament stretch in 2007 and 2008, Johnson and Rory McIlroy (2014: Open Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, PGA Championship) are the only two golfers to string together at least a trio of triumphs.
While many of the world’s best golfers are looking ahead to next week’s Memorial Tournament, Scheffler is spearheading the Charles Schwab Challenge field. Hideki Matsuyama (No. 7) is the only other top-10 player in the field, and though Maverick McNealy (No. 11), Tommy Fleetwood (No. 14), English (No. 17, a leap of 17 spots), and six other top-30 players will also be on the course, Scheffler should be and is a heavy favorite to make the trip to Muirfield Village off the heels of a third straight victory.

Tournament Winner Pick: Scottie Scheffler
Scheffler finished second, tied for third, and tied for second in this tournament each of the last three years, so you would think it is only a matter of time before he wins it.
Each time, he was unable to deliver on Sunday when he needed to, a sign that he is, after all, somewhat mortal. It could happen again, but he is the best player in the field by some distance, and not picking him following his PGA Championship win would feel negligent.
Harris English to finish in the top 20 (+125)
Thanks to his PGA Championship result, English, who won the Farmers Insurance Open in January, made a five-spot jump to seventh in the U.S. team rankings for this year’s Ryder Cup.
With fellow hopefuls like McNealy (No. 8), Novak (No. 9), Harman (No. 10), Spaun (No. 11), and Berger (No. 13) also playing, the Charles Schwab Challenge represents an opportunity for several players to help their case to be one of the captain’s picks if they fall short of the top six automatic spots.
Other than a tie for 66th in the RBC Heritage last month, English has had a decent spring so far, posting four top-20 finishes in five tournaments and landing high on the leaderboard at both the Masters (tied for 12th) and PGA Championship. Look for his positive play to continue this week.
J.T. Poston to finish in the top 20 (+125)
In eight previous appearances in what is now the Charles Schwab Challenge, Poston has finished in the top 20 three times, with his best result a tie for 10th in 2020.
Last year, he finished tied for 12th after missing the cut in three straight appearances, which proved to be the last top-20 finish he would have until he won the Shriners Children’s Open in October.
He will hope to avoid a similar downturn after this tournament this time around, especially because he is in the midst of his best stretch of the season.
His tie for fifth at the PGA Championship was his fourth consecutive top-25 finish, his best such stretch since opening last year with four consecutive top-20 finishes.
We will see how he will fare from here, but look for Poston’s decent form to continue this week.
Davis Riley to finish in the top 20 (+210)
Since opening the season by withdrawing in the fourth round at The Sentry then missing the cut at his next four tournaments, Riley has had a mixed bag of results.
But he picked a fine time to produce his best showing of the year, and even after shooting a one-over 72 in the final round at Quail Hollow, he bagged a $1.4 million payday, the second biggest of his PGA Tour career.
The biggest came at last year’s Charles Schwab Challenge, when he bested the field, including Scheffler, to win by five strokes and collect a $1.6 million check.
Given that he has not had an outstanding season overall, you can get good value on Riley to produce a decent finish this week. And as the defending winner is coming off of his best result of the season, jumping on that value is a wise move.
