The last major of the year is now in the books, and that means that the FedEx Cup playoffs are only a few weeks away. Only two events remain before the playoffs begin at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, and one is this week’s 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota.
This time of year carries extra meaning this year. Some Ryder Cup spots are still not set in stone with only a few more opportunities for U.S. and Europe hopefuls to either lock down a spot in the top six or secure a captain’s pick.

3M Open Predictions and Picks
Tournament Winner: Wyndham Clark
Last month, Clark missed the cut at the U.S. Open and didn’t take his struggles at Oakmont well, earning a ban from the property after damaging the locker room.
It came during a period in which his best finish in a five-tournament stretch was a tie for 50th at the PGA Championship, but the news of his ban did not emerge until last week.
Fortunately, while the headlines might be less than ideal for him at present, he seems to be trying to put it behind him on the course. In four tournaments since the U.S. Open, he has finished in the top 20 three times, including a tie for fourth at the Open Championship last week after overcoming a first-round 76 by shooting 66-66-65 across the last three rounds.
Following his best finish of the season, Clark moved from 22nd to 16th in the Ryder Cup team rankings. If he can finish strong, he will give Keegan Bradley and the captaincy team something to think about, at the very least.
With that in mind, an excellent result at the 3M Open is imperative for Clark. His last three rounds at Royal Portrush should serve as a significant boost for his confidence, and that should translate into a successful week at TPC Twin Cities.
Chris Gotterup to finish in the top 10 (+250 at BetOnline)
Prior to the Scottish Open, Gotterup was 71st in the Ryder Cup U.S. team rankings. After winning the Scottish Open and coming in third behind Scottie Scheffler and Harris English in the Open Championship, Gotterup is now 22nd in the rankings.
Can he continue this charge and land on the team? Making the team still feels like a long shot, as several players are locks, some others are close, and some others have the goods to give themselves a good case to be picked.
He may well come up short, but he is giving it his best shot. Look for him to keep doing so this week. To mitigate some of the risk of this play, a top-20 finish has odds of +125 at BetOnline.
Maverick McNealy to finish in the top 10 (+200 at BetOnline)
Were the Ryder Cup team picked solely on the rankings, McNealy, who is ranked 11th, would be in a strong position right now.
But it is not, and he, the struggling Collin Morikawa (7th), and Ben Griffin (8th), who has cooled off as of late, could all be passed over in favor of other options. Like Griffin, he would be a Ryder Cup first-timer, and it remains to be seen how much notoriety and experience matter versus recent results.
All McNealy can do is give himself the strongest resume possible, and this week should be a solid and perhaps even spectacular week for him. McNealy has six top-10 finishes this season, four of which came in signature events, and he had three rounds in the 60s at Royal Portrush last week, including a final-round 66. It also doesn’t hurt that he finished third in last year’s 3M Open.
Sam Burns to finish in the top 20 (+115 at BetOnline)
Burns did not have an outstanding time in the U.K., with a tie for 47th in the Scottish Open and a tie for 45th in the Open Championship.
Burns, who has been a part of the last three U.S. team events (the Presidents Cup in 2022 and 2024 and the Ryder Cup in 2023), needed better results in both tournaments to really help his cause. He sits 15th entering the 3M Open, and he is one of several possibilities that could go either way right now.
Fortunately, he should fare much better back on American soil and help move the needle positively for his Ryder Cup hopes.
In the eight tournaments prior to his trying travels, Burns finished in the top 20 seven times and was a Sunday contender at both the Canadian Open and U.S. Open. Now would be a fantastic time to pick up his first win since the final edition of the WGC Match Play two years ago, and he can if he can put four strong rounds together.
