Perhaps it was inevitable, but with seven races remaining in the 2025 Formula 1 season, the stage is set for some potential drama down the stretch. Will another twist take place in Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix?
Four-time defending champion Max Verstappen was 104 points behind Oscar Piastri following the latter’s in the Dutch Grand Prix. But with back-to-back wins in the Italian Grand Prix and Azerbaijan Grand Prix, combined with a disastrous DNF for Piastri in Baku, Verstappen is now only 69 points behind Piastri with plenty of time to haul him down.
Between Piastri and Verstappen is Lando Norris, who failed to capitalize on Piastri’s poor weekend in Azerbaijan, qualifying and finishing seventh. That meant he did gain six points on his McLaren teammate, but the gap is 25 when it could have been less if he had found a way past Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson at the end to salvage at least a top-five finish.
Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship Standings (Through 17 of 24 Races)
- 1. Oscar Piastri – 324
- 2. Lando Norris – 299
- 3. Max Verstappen – 255
- 4. George Russell – 212
- 5. Charles Leclerc – 165
- 6. Lewis Hamilton – 121
- 7. Kimi Antonelli – 78
- 8. Alexander Albon – 70
- 9. Isack Hadjar – 39
- 10. Nico Hulkenberg – 37
Will Verstappen close the gap even further in Singapore?
He will start second on the grid, occupying the front row with polesitter George Russell, who is on pole for the second time this season. Last time out, an unwell Russell put in a standout shift in Baku to finish second and grab his seventh podium of the season.
Can he convert pole into his second victory in 2025? BetOnline and other top online sportsbooks have the Mercedes man as one of the leading favorites along with Verstappen, followed by Piastri and Norris, who will start third and fifth, respectively.

Singapore Grand Prix Predictions and Picks\
George Russell to win the Singapore Grand Prix (+150 at Lucky Rebel)
The only other time Russell has been on pole this season, he took the win at the Canadian Grand Prix.
In that race, he and Verstappen started and finished first and second, Kimi Antonelli rounded out the podium after starting fourth and finishing third, and Piastri finished fourth after starting third.
The front two rows are the same for the Singapore GP, and while the order behind him could prove to be different, I like Russell to convert a pole into a win for the second time this season.
Russell has recorded consecutive podiums just twice in his Formula 1 career, so this is going against his history.
But claiming pole the eighth time in his Formula 1 career is a positive omen. In the previous seven times he has started up front, he has won three times and finished on the podium five times.
Carlos Sainz Jr. to Finish in the Top 10 (+300 at Bovada)
Sainz and Williams teammate Alexander Albon will start at the back of the grid after their qualifying results were disqualified as their rear wings fell afoul of regulations.
That puts Sainz, who will start last, in a tough position. But I see it as an opportunity to get some good value on him to make a move and finish in the points. The Marina Bay circuit is known for being difficult for passing, but at +300, this is one you can take and not lose any sleep if it doesn’t cash.
It was, of course, in a different car, but Sainz owns a Formula 1 win in Singapore, and he has an experience advantage over many of the drivers he will have to pass to reach the top 10. That can be handy due to the physical and mental demands of this race due to the weather conditions. Plus, after getting on the podium in Baku, he knows he has the machinery to move through the field.
Lewis Hamilton to finish in the Top Three (+1200 at Lucky Rebel)
Hamilton, who qualified sixth, is still searching for his first Ferrari podium, and the odds are against it being this weekend. But after losing his beloved Roscoe last weekend, this is a sentimental pick made in the hope that some good fortune will shine down on Hamilton in Singapore.
An additional pick that is less of a long shot and offers some rather decent value is a dual top-six finish for Ferrari, which is available at +150. Charles Leclerc will start seventh, and he and Hamilton have both finished in the top six only once in the last six races. But at +150, it is definitely worth more than a little look.
