Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix Predictions & Picks: Opportunity Knocks for Norris in Tight Title Tussle

2025 Mexico City Grand Prix polesitter Lando Norris - Formula 1 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix Predictions & Picks

With five races remaining in the 2025 Formula 1 season, the championship battle is well and truly a three-horse race now between Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris, and Max Verstappen, who has won three of the last four races to resurrect his fight for five consecutive World Drivers’ Championship titles.

At the United States Grand Prix last weekend, Verstappen trimmed a further 23 points from his deficit to Piastri by sweeping Saturday’s sprint and Sunday’s 56-lap race, while Piastri crashed out of the sprint on the opening lap and managed only a fifth-place finish in Sunday’s race.

Entering today’s Mexico City Grand Prix, Verstappen trails Piastri by just 40 points, with Lando Norris sandwiched between them, only 14 points behind his teammate and 26 points clear of Verstappen following a runner-up finish last Sunday.

Current Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship Standings (Through 19 of 24 Races)

  • 1. Oscar Piastri – 346
  • 2. Lando Norris – 332
  • 3. Max Verstappen – 306
  • 4. George Russell – 252
  • 5. Charles Leclerc – 192
  • 6. Lewis Hamilton – 142
  • 7. Kimi Antonelli – 89
  • 8. Alexander Albon – 73
  • 9. Nico Hulkenberg – 41
  • 10. Isack Hadjar – 39

Today’s race presents an opportunity for Norris to potentially end a race weekend atop the standings for the first time since the Bahrain Grand Prix, the fourth race of the season.

Yesterday, Norris claimed his fifth pole of the season, his first since the Belgian Grand Prix in July. His Q3 time was 0.262 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc and 0.372 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who secured his best qualifying result of the season.

While Norris had an outstanding qualifying run, the same cannot be said for his fellow Formula 1 title rivals. After starting on the front row in each of the last four races, Verstappen will start fifth. Piastri, meanwhile, will start seventh after posting just the eighth-best time in Q3, with a small boost due to Carlos Sainz Jr. being demoted five places to 12th for his collision with Kimi Antonelli last weekend.

Courtesy of his lofty starting position, Norris sits atop Mexico City Grand Prix odds at BetOnline and other top online sportsbooks. But will he come through as a heavy favorite?

Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix Predictions and Picks

Lewis Hamilton to Finish in the Top Three (+120 at Lucky Rebel)

It has been a largely frustrating and forgettable first season at Ferrari for Hamilton, but after finishing fourth in both races at Circuit of the Americas, he qualified in the top three for the first time this season.

That is an especially notable result, not only because of how this season has gone for Hamilton, but also because of how recent seasons have gone. His 104 poles are far and away still a Formula 1 record, but only one has come in the last four seasons and today will mark just the 12th time in the last four seasons that he will start third or better.

Can he convert it into his first podium for Ferrari? Verstappen and Piastri will both be charging hard, and so will former Mercedes teammate George Russell, who is targeting the best season of his Formula 1 career.

But these are good odds for a good result for Hamilton, who was one of the three drivers who posted a time under a minute and 16 seconds in Q3 yesterday.

Both Red Bull Cars to Finish in The Top 10 (-130 at BetOnline)

Given Tsunoda’s top-10 finish odds (-150 at BetOnline), the odds for this particular play elsewhere (-185 at Lucky Rebel, for example), and how little actual value there is on the board overall, this represents some pretty shrewd Formula 1 betting value.

Disaster could very well befall Verstappen, but the most uncertain part of this equation is obviously Tsunoda. However, he has finished in the points in three of the last five races, including a season-high sixth-place finish in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and he will start 10th today after being bumped up a spot by Sainz’s penalty.
