Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix Predictions and Picks
Oscar Piastri to win the Hungarian Grand Prix (+105 at BetOnline)
In qualifying, Leclerc edged out Piastri, Norris, and Russell for pole, his first pole of the season.
On one hand, five of Leclerc’s eight Formula 1 wins have come from pole.
On the other hand, this is the 27th pole of Leclerc’s F1 career, and he has converted only five of the previous 26 poles to wins.
With the latter factoid in mind, the value does not sit with Leclerc in this spot. Instead, it sits with Piastri, who was edged out for pole by 0.026 seconds and claimed his maiden Formula 1 win at this race last year.
The last time Leclerc was on pole was last year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Who won that race? Piastri, who started second.
Of Piastri’s eight F1 wins over the last season and a half, only three have come with him on pole. So, there is no concern about him not starting from the front.
Lewis Hamilton to finish in the top six (+150 at BetOnline and Bovada)
The frustrations continue for Hamilton, who failed to make it out of Q2 and will start 12th this week after failing to make it out of Q1 and starting 16th last week.
His struggles at this point in his debut season with Ferrari are made all the more pronounced by Leclerc’s five podium finishes, including four in the last six races, and Leclerc claiming pole at the Hungaroring rubs even more salt into the wound.
But some struggles are to be expected when he is still getting acclimated with a new team, a new setup, and a new car, and while the summer break can’t get here fast enough for Hamilton, you can’t write off someone with his pedigree.
Last week, he improved nine spots from his starting position and finished seventh, which was respectable enough, all things considered. He’s got some work to do to improve upon last week’s finish, but it’s well worth the play at these odds.
Gabriel Bortoleto to finish in the top 10 (-165 at BetOnline and Bovada)
There was some juice with this play last week and even more this week, but that doesn’t diminish it being a good play.
Yesterday, Bortoleto qualified seventh, the best qualifying result of his rookie Formula 1 campaign. This will be only the third time that he starts inside the top 10, and he is two for two in converting such starts into points. In addition to starting and finishing ninth in the Belgian Grand Prix, he started and finished eighth in Austria.
The 20-year-old Brazilian appears to getting increasingly comfortable behind the wheel of an F1 car, and it is going to be interesting to see how he performs after the summer break. Will he go into it with more points? That is a strong bet based on where he will start.
