Canadian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks: No Montreal Magic for Mad Max?

Mercedes driver George Russell, the polesitter for the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix (2025 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks cover)

The 2025 Formula 1 season is nearing the halfway point, and the results of the last two rounds in Monaco and Spain have seen the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris get some valuable separation between themselves and Max Verstappen and George Russell. But with Russell and Verstappen starting at the front for the Canadian Grand Prix, the title race could take a twist today in Montreal. Read on for race odds, predictions, and picks for the tenth round of the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Russell, Verstappen Look to Tighten Title Race

At the Spanish Grand Prix, Piastri and Norris finished 1-2 for the third time this season. And as in the other two instances, it was Piastri on the top step of the podium, as he erased some of the ground that Norris had made up in the Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship standings by scoring superior results in the previous two races at Imola and Monaco.

However, the race finished under a colossal cloud of controversy due to Verstappen’s penchant for petulance rearing its ugly head again. On the 64th lap of the 66-lap race, Verstappen appeared to intentionally cause a collision with George Russell while refusing to let Russell through for fourth as he had been instructed to do.

The resulting ten-second penalty dropped him to tenth, and three penalty points moved the four-time defending Formula 1 champion within a point of a one-race ban.

Should Verstappen have received a harsher penalty? Given his history, there is a worthwhile argument, protocol be damned.

But that has not occurred, and Verstappen will line up second on the Canadian Grand Prix starting grid. Starting up front will be Russell, who won pole for this race for the second straight year.

Championship leader Piastri qualified third, while Norris will only start seventh. He was first in Q1 and second in Q2, but in Q3, he went slower than he did in Q2 and finished 0.726 seconds behind Russell.

So, the opportunity exists for Russell (65 points behind Norris and 75 points behind Piastri) and Verstappen (39 points behind Norris and 49 points behind Piastri) to close the gap between themselves and the McLarens. It is also an opportunity for Verstappen is to direct attention away from his attitude to his aptitude and boost his hopes of a fifth straight title.

Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix Predictions and Picks

George Russell to finish in the top two (+100 at Bovada)

In recent Canadian Grand Prix history, starting at or near the front has proven to be a positive omen. The last time the Canadian GP polesitter finished outside of the podium place was 2012, when polesitter Sebastian Vettel finished fourth. In the ten races since, the polesitter has finished first or second nine times, with Russell’s third-place finish last year the lone non-top two finish.

Also, in four of the last six editions of this race, the drivers who qualified first, second, and third went on to occupy the podium places, with the drivers who qualified first and third finishing on the podium in the other two races in that stretch.

So, if you are betting on Formula 1 odds for this race, taking Russell for a top-two finish is a decent value play, even if he has only one podium finish in his last five races.

Lewis Hamilton H2H (-115 at BetOnline) vs Kimi Antonelli

Antonelli will start fourth and Hamilton fifth, but Hamilton is a good bet to record a better result than the rookie.

Hamilton is still seeking his first Grand Prix podium with Ferrari, but he has finished in the top six in each of the last three races after doing so only once in the first six races of the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Also, Hamilton has now qualified in the top six in three straight races after doing so only once in the first six races. Things are still very much a work in progress with his new team, but some positive steps appear to be happening.

Antonelli, meanwhile, has two retirements sandwiched around an 18th-place finish after finishing in the top six five times in his first six races.

Gabriel Bortoleto H2H (-125 at BetOnline) vs Lance Stroll

Stroll is making a quick comeback to the track after withdrawing from the Spanish Grand Prix and having surgery on his hand and wrist.

But the outlook is not an optimistic one for him, as he will start 17th after failing to make it out of Q1. Stroll has Aston Martin’s only points of the 2025 F1 season, but he has not finished in the points in a Grand Prix since opening the season with points finishes in the first two races.

Bortoleto, who will start 15th, has yet to score a point, but his results are gradually improving. In Spain, he came in 12th, the best finish of his fledgling Formula 1 career.

This is Stroll’s home race, but it is hard to see him producing a positive performance with how things have been going and when there are concerns that he may be coming back from surgery too early.
