Who Are This Year’s NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament Favorites?
Two months after the SEC received a record 14 men’s March Madness bids, the conference has received a record 13 NCAA baseball tournament berths. Only Missouri, South Carolina, and preseason No. 1 Texas A&M failed to make the field of 64 from the conference.
Of those 13 teams, many have serious hopes of making it to Omaha and potentially coming away with the trophy. Entering the tournament, seven of the eight teams with the shortest odds are from the SEC, with North Carolina the lone outsider.
At the top of the heap sits Arkansas, who will look to put years of crushing disappointments behind them and finally win the program’s first CWS title.
Arkansas
The Razorbacks were a top-eight seed each of the past two years but failed to even make it out of the regionals on both occasions.
On paper, an early NCAA baseball tournament exit should not befall the Hogs for a third straight year.
Pitching isn’t their strength as it has been in other seasons, but they are a downright fearsome unit at the plate. As a team, they hit at a .313 clip, average 8.8 runs per game, and have bashed 110 home runs. Seven Razorbacks have hit 10 or more home runs, led by shortstop and SEC Player of the Year Wehiwa Aloy (.353, 18 HR, 58 RBI), who could be a high first-round pick in the upcoming MLB Draft.
LSU
The Tigers will be seeking their eighth national title, armed with a lineup that has hammered 90 home runs and a pitching staff led by righty Anthony Eyanson (9-2, 2.77 ERA, 125 Ks in 84.1 IP) and southpaw sensation Kade Anderson (8-1, 3.54 ERA, 145 Ks in 89 IP), a potential top-five overall pick in the draft.
Vanderbilt
After winning the SEC Tournament, the Commodores received the No. 1 overall seed for the first time since 2007. They will be hoping for a better result than that year, when they were upset by Michigan in the regionals.
Vandy doesn’t have the big bats that other contenders have, as they are hitting just .270 with 62 homers as a team. But they are terrors on the basepaths, with 105 steals in 130 attempts, and with a stout bullpen, they are tough to beat if they get a lead.
Texas
Part of what was said about Vanderbilt can also be said about Texas, who excelled in their first season in the SEC.
They enter the NCAA baseball tournament atop the SEC in ERA (3.56), and they boast one of the best closers in college baseball in freshman Dylan Volantis (4-1, 1.99 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 12 saves, 68 Ks in 45.1 IP).
At the plate, they are hitting only .274 as a team, but they do have four hitters with 10+ homers and lead the SEC in doubles with 122.
