Regional Upsets Decimate NCAA Baseball Tournament Bracket

Of the 16 teams left in the championship conversation, nine are national seeds, which is only one fewer than last year, when 10 national seeds won their regionals and seven advanced to the College World Series.

However, last year, the top four national seeds all made the trip to Omaha, which will not be the case this year. That is because the top two seeds, Vanderbilt and Texas, were both sent packing.

So were fellow national seeds Georgia, Ole Miss, Clemson, Oregon, and Southern Miss.

The two biggest shockers in the regional round saw Vanderbilt fail to even make the championship game of the Nashville Regional after falling to Wright State (the No. 4 seed in the regional) in an elimination game. Then Texas was upended by UTSA and Ole Miss, the No. 10 national seed, along with falling to Murray State, the No. 4 seed in the Oxford Regional.

That sets up several intriguing matchups and the possibility that we could see the likes of Murray State, UTSA, and West Virginia in the College World Series for the first time, Duke in for the first time since 1961, and Coastal Carolina and Miami (FL) in for the first time in almost a decade.

Still, there are some serious powerhouses in the field, even with the SEC contingent being trimmed from 13 teams to just four (and with two of those four set to meet, as Arkansas will host Tennessee). Six of the top nine national seeds are still alive. So are the defending national champions, who are one of seven Super Regional teams who own at least one national title.

NCAA Baseball Tournament Super Regional Odds, Predictions, and Picks

Arizona at North Carolina

Series Odds

  • Arizona +254
  • North Carolina -350

Whether it goes two games or three, expect a lot of runs in this matchup. The Tar Heels scored 14 runs in their Chapel Hill Regional championship game win over Oklahoma, while Arizona put two touchdowns on the board in consecutive games against Utah Valley and Cal Poly as they won the Eugene Regional.

Don’t count out Arizona’s chances of taking the series to three games, but look for North Carolina to return to Omaha after going 1-2 there last year.

Miami (FL) at Louisville

Series Odds

  • Miami (FL) +143
  • Louisville -185

Can the Cardinals ride their pitching once again? In winning the Nashville Regional, Louisville allowed only five runs in three games, including a shutout of Wright State in the championship game.

Louisville is 27-7 at home this season and won series against UNC and FSU at Jim Patterson Stadium. Look for them to close out their home season with a dogpile.

Florida State at Oregon State

Series Odds

  • Florida State -110
  • Oregon State -120

Oregon State is a talented team with a gaudy record, but their schedule is sorely lacking in top-tier opposition, and even their regional wasn’t one of the toughest in the NCAA baseball tournament bracket. We will find out how good they are this weekend against the Seminoles. That this matchup is in Corvallis gives the Beavers an edge, but there is a reason why the odds are this tight.

Coastal Carolina at Auburn

Series Odds

  • Coastal Carolina +121
  • Auburn -155

This is another matchup in which the over profiles as a strong play in each game. The Chanticleers eked out a 1-0 win over East Carolina to reach the Supers, but they scored 28 runs in their first two Conway Regional games, and the Tigers scored 28 runs in dispatching Central Connecticut State, Stetson, and NC State in the Auburn Regional.

While chalk looks like the move in most of these Super Regional matchups, here’s one where the road team is a rather compelling option. Their top three starting pitchers, Jacob Harrison, Riley Eikhoff, and Cameron Flukey, are a combined 24-3 with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP this season. Those numbers will make you a tough out anywhere.

Murray State at Duke

Series Odds

  • Murray State +287
  • Duke -405

The Racers showed no fear last weekend in Oxford, scoring 42 runs in four games as they outslugged Ole Miss twice and Georgia Tech once in a stunning showing. So, you can expect them to similarly approach this matchup with the Blue Devils, who are in the Supers for the fourth time in the last seven editions of the NCAA baseball tournament.

This is by far their best shot at ending the program’s long College World Series drought, as the previous three matchups were against top-16 national seeds. And after losing in a winner-take-all Game 3 in those appearances in 2018, 2019, and 2023, Duke will finally return to Omaha for the first time since 1961. It won’t come easy though, as these Murray State mashers clearly have some serious moxie.

West Virginia at LSU

Series Odds

  • West Virginia +301
  • LSU -430

LSU made things far too interesting against an Arkansas-Little Rock team with a losing record, falling in the first championship game and then falling behind 5-1 in the second one before rallying for a 10-6 win.

That rocky ride didn’t deter oddsmakers, as the Tigers enter this weekend still in a very prominent position in the latest NCAA baseball tournament winner odds. And that might be just the wakeup call they need to bring their best against the Mountaineers, who won the Big 12 regular season title and are in the Supers for the second straight season.

Look for that scare to be a catalyst for LSU, along with a raucous Alex Box Stadium crowd.

Tennessee at Arkansas

Series Odds

  • Tennessee +124
  • Arkansas -160

If the Razorbacks are to slay their postseason demons, this will be one of the most arduous parts of that journey.

That the defending champs stumbled enough in the regular season to miss out on a top-eight seed of their own may be at the detriment of Arkansas, who will be under some serious pressure this weekend. They are the highest seed remaining, the Vols are a rival (and coached by former Arkansas assistant Tony Vitello), and they are fighting a history littered with heartbreak after heartbreak.

That pressure might prove to be too much of a hassle for the Hogs, for all of the talent that they have. They had a smooth ride through the regional round, but yet another heartbreak is on the horizon.

UTSA vs UCLA

Series Odds

  • UTSA +128
  • UCLA -165

Led by Roch Cholowsky (.370, 23 HR, 72 RBI) and Mulivai Levu (.321, 12 HR, 84 RBI), UCLA has four players with at least 50 RBI this season, while UTSA has three players with at least 60 RBI, with the standout in their lineup being Mason Lytle (.369, 22 2B, 9 HR, 67 RBI, 74 R, 17-22 SB). Expect to see some runs in this series, especially with pitching not a particular strength on either side.

When you can swing the bat well, it will keep you in most games, and that makes UTSA a worthwhile pick after they went into Austin and shocked a team many expected to see make a serious run at a national title.
