The 2025 CFL season has been full of wild games and results, but Week 15 threw up one of the most unexpected results of the season. And after ending their five-game losing streak in the most spectacular fashion, the Montreal Alouettes will look to even their record for the second as they visit the Toronto Argonauts to kick off Week 16. Friday night’s Alouettes vs. Argonauts faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET, and viewers in the U.S. can watch for free on CFL+.
Last Saturday, the Alouettes went into Mosaic Field in Regina, Saskatchewan with five straight losses, all of which featured obscenely bad results for the offense.
But in a result that few would have seen coming (including yours truly), the Alouettes stunned the 10-2 Roughriders 48-31.
The Alouettes went ahead early, and the Roughriders, who won 34-6 in Montreal in Week 9, were unable to find a way back into the game.
In his return from the six-game injured list, McLeod Bethel-Thompson (20 of 26, 379 yards, 3 TD) had a huge day, as did his favorite target, Tyson Philpot (9 catches, 238 yards, 2 TD). So did running back Stevie Scott III (19 carries, 125 yards), who did his part for an offense that racked up 531 total yards.
The upset kept the Roughriders from all but locking up the West Division title. It also kept the Alouettes alone in second in the East Division.
However, hot on Montreal’s heels is Toronto. They head into this week’s Alouettes vs. Argonauts matchup just a game back of second in the East.
CFL East Division Standings (Through Week 15)
Teams get two points for a win.
- 1. Hamilton Tiger-Cats – 16 (8-5)
- 2. Montreal Alouettes – 12 (6-7)
- 3. Toronto Argonauts – 10 (5-8)
- 4. Ottawa Redblacks – 8 (4-9)
Their 31-30 win over Edmonton last Saturday was their third straight win, and it saw the Argos overcome a 10-point deficit in the last three-plus minutes and win despite a rough day for QB Nick Arbuckle.
Whether it was just a rough day for Arbuckle or Kelly’s looming return threw him off, Arbuckle threw four interceptions. He also didn’t finish the game after suffering a late calf injury, which meant that Toronto’s game-winning drive came courtesy of Jarrett Doege.
The injury will keep Arbuckle sidelined this week and hand the reins to Doege for only the second CFL start. Can he lead Toronto to a big home win? Alouettes vs. Argonauts Prediction and Picks
Prediction: Argonauts to win
With Arbuckle out and Kelly still sidelined, Doege will draw his first CFL start since June 30, 2023. That day, he started for the Edmonton Elks in a 26-7 Week 4 loss at Ottawa.
Taking a side in this one would seem to be pretty straightforward, right? The Argonauts are heating up but find themselves in a tough spot with Arbuckle out and Kelly not ready yet. And on the other side, the Alouettes are coming off a resounding road result vs. the CFL’s best team.
But this league is anything but straightforward, and I’m not sold that I can trust Bethel-Thompson even after last week’s performance. One good week does not mean everything is all of a sudden clicking for him and for the Alouettes as a whole.
Can Toronto put points on the board with Doege? In a small sample size last Saturday, he did enough to lead a game-winning drive in the final 80 seconds, and the Alouettes still allowed 477 yards and four touchdowns last week.
The Argos have played well at home and were it not for a defensive capitulation against the Redblacks in Week 10, they would be entering this matchup vs. the Alouettes with four consecutive home wins. Even with Arbuckle out, I think they have a good chance to keep things going at BMO Field and pick up a fourth straight win.
Alouettes vs. Argonauts Picks
1) Alouettes/Argonauts Over 50.5 (-110 at Everygame)
If the Argonauts do win, I don’t see Toronto’s defense completely shutting down Montreal’s offense. They didn’t allow a ton of yards against Edmonton in Week 15 but still gave up 30 points for the seventh time this season, and they have given up 26+ points in 11 of 13 games.
So, if they do indeed win, they will likely need to score a decent number of points themselves. It’s certainly a bigger ask with Doege, but they still have the pieces to move the ball well.
2) Argonauts First Half +3.5 (-105 at Lucky Rebel)
After not scoring 28 or more points since Week 3, the Alouettes scored 28 in the first half at Saskatchewan last Saturday thanks to three touchdowns (two by Philpot), two field goals, and a single. That unexpected flurry of scoring saw them take an 18-point halftime lead, their first lead at the break since Week 10 against the Elks.
The Argonauts, meanwhile, sputtered and stuttered out of the gate and trailed Edmonton 14-3 at halftime. That was their first halftime deficit at home since Week 5 against the Ti-Cats. Again, this is a risk because they are starting their third-string QB. But I like them to continue to fare well at home.
3) Argonauts Team Total Over 22.5 Points (-105 at Bovada)
Again, this is a risk with Doege in and the Alouettes coming in with some confidence, but only three times this season have the Argonauts been held to fewer than 23 points. Two of those came in the first two weeks of the season, and only one of the three has come at home (a 29-19 loss to the Calgary Stampeders in Week 2).
