Last week was yet another profitable week for underdogs in the Canadian Football League. In Week 8, all four underdogs covered the spread, and three of four won outright, including two on the road. Will dogs continue to bark in CFL Week 9?
Below, we look at recent betting trends and give a rundown of the four games on the CFL Week 9 schedule, complete with spread, moneyline, and over/under odds for each matchup from BetOnline, who heads our list of top online sportsbooks.

CFL Underdogs on a Roll Entering Week 9
In the first four weeks of the CFL season, favorites had the upper hand over underdogs.
But in the last four weeks, the value has firmly been with the underdogs.
Entering Week 9, underdogs are 18-13 ATS and 15-16 SU. But after favorites went 10-6 SU and ATS in the first four weeks of the season, underdogs are 12-3 ATS and 9-6 SU in the last four weeks.
If you placed point spread and moneyline bets on all of the underdogs in Week 8, you would have come away with a rather tidy profit.
The Montreal Alouettes (at Calgary) and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (at BC) both came back in the fourth quarter to cover and win outright on the road, while the Toronto Argonauts covered and won at home against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The Edmonton Elks were the lone dog to not win outright, but they did at least cover a nearly double-digit spread in a 21-18 loss at Saskatchewan thanks to two fourth-quarter touchdowns against the Roughriders.
Here is a week-by-week breakdown of ATS and SU results for the 31 CFL games from Week 1 to Week 8, with spread favorites, moneyline favorites, and overs listed first:

Calgary Stampeders (5-2, 3-0 away) vs. Ottawa Redblacks (1-6, 0-3 home), 7:30 p.m. ET, CFL+

| Team | Spread | Moneyline | Over/Under |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calgary Stampeders | +3.5 (-105) | +170 | Over 49.5 (-110) |
| Ottawa Redblacks | -3.5 (-115) | -195 | Under 49.5 (-110) |
Calgary entered Week 8 as the hottest team in the CFL thanks to three consecutive wins over the Blue Bombers and Roughriders, the presumptive top two teams in the West Division.
It looked like that run was going to continue, but on the penultimate play of the third quarter against the Alouettes, quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. was knocked out for the game while scrambling on a second down.
At that point, the Stampeders were up 21-14. But former NFL QB P.J. Walker, getting his most significant CFL action to date, was ineffective in four possessions in the final quarter, and the Alouettes booted three field goals to steal a 23-21 win at McMahon Stadium.
Unfortunately for the Stampeders, Adams has been ruled for tonight’s Week 9 opener in Ottawa, which means that Walker will start for the first time since Week 8 of the 2023 NFL season, when he started for the Cleveland Browns in a 24-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
The Stampeders will also be without CFL interceptions leader Adrian Greene and rookie receiver Damien Alford, who is tied for second in the league in receiving touchdowns.
Thanks in no small part to those three key names being out for the visitors, the Redblacks are favored to beat the Stampeders for the second time this season. In Week 3, Ottawa pulled out a 20-12 win in Calgary, as they held the Stampeders without a touchdown and racked up 239 rushing yards on offense.
Since picking up their lone win, the Redblacks, who were off last week, have lost four straight games. Will that schneid stop tonight?

Toronto Argonauts (2-5, 1-2 away) vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3-3, 2-1 home), 8:30 p.m. ET, CFL+

| Team | Spread | Moneyline | Over/Under |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto Argonauts | +3 (-115) | +135 | Over 50 (-110) |
| Winnipeg Blue Bombers | -3 (-105) | -155 | Under 50 (-110) |
With Chad Kelly sidelined, the reigning Grey Cup champions have struggled mightily early on. But in a rematch of last season’s CFL championship clash, the Argos stunned the Blue Bombers 31-17 in Week 8.
It was their first home win this season after three consecutive losses and no doubt a huge shot in the arm for Toronto, especially after throwing away an 18-point lead in the second half at Montreal the previous week.
This week, they make the trek to Manitoba for a rematch, and like the Stampeders, the Blue Bombers will be without their star signal-caller, as Zach Collaros has been ruled out due to a reported neck injury. Collaros started last Saturday’s game after missing most of the Week 7 loss to the Stampeders, but he didn’t return for the second half after throwing interceptions on Winnipeg’s last two possessions of the first half.
With Collaros out, Chris Streveler will make his second start of the season. Streveler started in Week 2 against the BC Lions and went 15 for 24 for 246 yards and three touchdowns with one interception in a 34-20 win, but his relief stints in the last two weeks have generated all of two touchdowns in 14 possessions.
While Streveler has struggled to steer the Blue Bombers down the field, Argos QB Nick Arbuckle had one of his best games of the season in last week’s win. Arbuckle was 22 for 31 for 316 yards and two touchdowns through the air, did not throw an interception for the first time this season, and added 32 rushing yards on three attempts. Can he build off of that performance and produce in Week 9?
Saturday, August 2
Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-2, 3-1 away) vs. Edmonton Elks (1-5, 1-2 home), 3:00 p.m. ET, CFL+

| Team | Spread | Moneyline | Over/Under |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hamilton Tiger-Cats | -3.5 (-110) | -185 | Over 55.5 (-110) |
| Edmonton Elks | +3.5 (-110) | +161 | Under 55.5 (-110) |
Sunday’s late show in Vancouver extended the Tiger-Cats’ win streak to five, and CFL Week 9 odds have Hamilton favored to make it six straight wins as they visit the Elks, who are high on effort but low on results.
Entering Week 9, the Ti-Cats lead the CFL in scoring at 32.1 points per game, and the win over the Lions was their fourth 30-point performance of the season.
The offense is humming along well thanks to veteran QB Bo Levi Mitchell, who leads the league in passing yards (2,201) and touchdown passes (15). Against BC, Mitchell completed 34 of 41 passes for a season-high 389 yards and had three touchdown tosses, and he will face a team that is last in points allowed per game (31.8 PPG) and total defense (425.0 yards allowed per game) and is the league’s worst team against the pass.
However, the Elks held Trevor Harris and the Roughriders to their second lowest scoring output of the season, which is no small feat when the Riders had hit the 30-point mark four times in their first six games this season.
Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-1, 3-0 away) vs. Montreal Alouettes (5-2, 2-1 home), 7:00 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network

| Team | Spread | Moneyline | Over/Under |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saskatchewan Roughriders | -2.5 (-121) | -155 | Over 50.5 (-110) |
| Montreal Alouettes | +2.5 (+101) | +135 | Under 50.5 (-110) |
In the marquee matchup of Week 9, the current top two Grey Cup favorites (as per the latest odds at Bovada) will meet on Saturday night in Montreal.
Notably, even though the Alouettes are at home, the visitors are favored.
After a wild rally to see off Toronto at home in Week 7, the Alouettes had another late show last week in Calgary.
After losing two relief starts against the Ti-Cats and Lions in Week 4 and Week 5, McLeod Bethel-Thompson delivered when needed at McMahon Stadium, which would have been a welcome sight for the Alouettes’ coaching staff, given that there are questions about how they handled Davis Alexander’s hamstring injury.
Alexander originally injured his hamstring in training camp, and after missing the aforementioned games against Hamilton and BC after it knocked him out against Edmonton in Week 3, he re-aggravated it while scoring the game-winning touchdown against the Argos in Week 7 and is on the six-game injured list.
This starts a run of four home games in a five-game stretch for the Alouettes, and they will need Bethel-Thompson to deliver again against the Roughriders, who still sit at or near the top of the CFL statistical charts in most major offensive categories even after a subpar showing against the Elks.
